Alley lots in D.C. hold promise for adding gentle density and missing middle housing, but strict zoning, costly utilities, and even alley naming requirements create major hurdles. This journal entry explores the challenges—and why these small sites call for persistence, creativity, and smart design solutions.
Single stair buildings, or point access blocks, offer a flexible and sustainable approach to urban housing. While common internationally, they are currently restricted in Washington, DC to three stories. This article explores proposed changes to local building codes that would allow taller single stair buildings, highlighting their design benefits, sustainability potential, and the policy and safety challenges that lie ahead.
