DC Living Building Challenge / DC Affordable Living Design Competition
Deanwood Market
Northeast Washington, DC
The DC Living Building Cooperative have identified in Deanwood a community that has been largely left out of the walkability boom enjoyed by much of DC over the past several years. However, this is starting to change with the improvements to the Marvin Gaye Park and Watts Branch that have begun to bridge the neighborhood to the surrounding city. We have designed the site to not just mend an existing gap in the urban fabric but to create a new destination in the midst of the neighborhood and better connect the community to Marvin Gaye Park. Our site plan includes livework residences that front on Dix street, a dynamic social space at the corner of Dix and 57th that functions as market (for the sale of produce from the on-site garden plots, as well as goods produced by residents in the surrounding neighborhood). The market also has the ability to expand into the adjacent streets for pedestrian-only special events. All of these features combine to create a new urban node that strives to improve the walkability, sustainability and economic vitality in the neighborhood.
Teass Warren Architects collaborated with Moody Landscape Architecture and District Homes on this project. We were honored to receive second place in a very competitive field. See our board as well as the other submissions here:
